A Poll Bill of 1692

The first assessments of Land Tax in 1692-3 were made under the terms of "An Act for granting to their Majesties an aid of four shillings in the pound for one year for carrying on a vigorous war against France". The Act specified that real estate and personal property, that is buildings and moveable goods as well as land, were to be taxed. Initially the tax calculation was based on the actual rental values of land and individual assessments.

A Poll Bill 1692, July 7th
The second Assessment made of the names, Sirnames, degrees & titles of the persons inhabiting within the said towne of Darsingham made by us who were appointed Assessors by the Comissioners for raising of mony by a Poll payable quarterly for one yeare according to an Act of Parliament for the carrying on a vigorous was against France.

Wee approve of you John Brigges and Edward Sharpen to be Collectors for the towne within mentioned for the second quarterly payment of the Poll and to collect Levy and gather the severall sumes within mentioned And pay the same to Mr. Leonard Blofeild at the Dukes Head in Lynn Regis upon the first day of August next. And in case any persons find themselves aggrevd the day of Appeales is appointed upon the 14th day of this instant July at the Maids Head in Hillington.  Given under our hands and sealed the 7th day of July 1692.
